What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta beans?
Those are the two main species of coffee beans.
The Arabica beans are the more delicate plant and they grow at a higher altitude. Their distinctive characteristics are a smoother more delicate taste and are considered gourmet coffee beans. More than 3/4 of beans traded in the world are Arabica beans.
Robusta beans on the other hand can grow in harsher conditions and lower altitude. That is where the name “robust” comes from. They have higher acidity with a harsh flavor and are higher in caffeine level.
What’s the difference between Decaffeinated Coffee (DECAF) and regular coffee?
To get one rumor out of the way, there is no such thing as Coffee grown without Caffeine. All coffee beans naturally contain caffeine.
To decaffeinate beans they are warmed and soaked in liquid to dissolve and remove the caffeine in one of four ways:
by using water alone (called the Swiss Water method), by using a mixture of water and solvents (most commonly methylene chloride or ethyl acetate) applied either directly or indirectly on the beans
or by using water and “supercritical carbon dioxide.”
All these methods are safe, and once the caffeine is removed (at least 97% of it), the beans are washed, steamed, and dried to evaporate all the liquids used in decaffeination.
